The Mesa in Everyday Life: Peruvian Shamanism In Action

by | Sep 6, 2015 | Uncategorized

Note: We will begin this Apprenticeship series in the Spring of 2016. The Oct. 2-4 start date has been moved to April 15-17, 2016. More information will be posted as it is available.

Indigenous healing traditions, more specifically the Peruvian mesa tradition, are based on a life path of service through ritual and ceremony in honor of Mother Earth (Pachamama) and the unseen worlds. This apprenticeship will be about attaining a state of balance and healing within ourselves and the outside world.

We will focus on creating and working deeply with the mesa, a form of healing altar used by curanderos in the North coast of Peru. The focus will be on our own personal healing and awakening, and that of the larger community and the planet. According to Peruvian shaman Oscar Miro-Quesada, the mesa is “a beautiful container of spirit and it is also a soul-infused artifact of the material world. It is a living dynamic pattern upon which and within which we can consciously do our transformative personal and planetary healing work.”

In embracing indigenous earth-honoring traditions such as this one, we are adding ourselves to the many lives devoted to a path of love and service. With that, we hope to experience more joy, empowerment, and communion with nature and spirit than ever believed possible.

In this apprenticeship we will:

  • Experience deep healing on all levels; physical, emotional, spiritual and mental
  • Strengthen our connection to Pachamama and all the elements through extensive work in nature
  • Connect to nature-based spiritual traditions of North and South America
  • Create a personal mesa to deepen our understanding of the healing power of the elements
  • Begin to live from a more authentic and truthful place
  • Come home to ourselves

We will be meeting four times within a one year period for intensive weekend retreat at Ronora Lodge and Retreat Center. Ronora is a nature preserve 100 miles outside of Chicago. Ronora is a sacred and safe haven that provides space to do deep transformative work. It is land that can be felt as sacred from the moment you step foot on the ground.

This apprenticeship program will require a commitment to attend all four gatherings. There will also be meetings of smaller groups in between the retreats to continue the process of healing and to integrate the teachings of the weekends. These meetings are optional and can be attended via Skype if you are traveling some distance. All workshops begin at 3 pm Friday afternoon and end at 2 pm on Sunday afternoon Eastern time.
