The 2nd chakra is called Svadisthana in the Hindu tradition, the literal meaning is “her special abode”. It calls on the energy of Shakti, or the awakening of the feminine through our sexual or creative center.
It is about power as a feminine force: the Goddess of creation/destruction. In men it is the awakening of the feminine within them which enhances and balances their power.
Along with the 1st and 3rd chakras, the 2nd is important to our connection with the physical body and the Earth that we live on. These physical connections directly affect our connection to Spirit and the Spiritual realm.
The spiritual life lessons of the 2nd chakra are related to creativity, sexuality, work/money, and physical desire. In imbalance, they are related to addictions. This chakra focuses on our relationships to others, and is about honoring one another and acting with integrity in all of our relationships.

Relationships and the 2nd Chakra
The 2nd Chakra is the partnership and relationship chakra. It reflects our need to connect with others and to exert some control over our physical environment.
The illnesses that result from an imbalance in this area are activated by a fear of losing control. It is the place where we hold fear and emotional wounds from early life that can make us sick. Fear of losing control through such things as addiction, rape, betrayal, financial loss, and abandonment are all issues held in the 2nd chakra.
It is in this chakra that we begin to perceive duality: yin/yang, male/female, sun energy/moon energy, love/fear. The understanding of the significance of these opposing forces is key to working with this chakra.
Finding balance in this duality is the spiritual meaning of working with this chakra, and it is through relationships that we receive most of the lessons about duality in all of its aspects. It is through relationships that we come to know ourselves.
The energy that we generate (originating in this chakra) determines the nature of all of our relationships. And the nature of our relationships reflect where we are out of balance with this energy.
In the next blog, I will talk about some of the areas affected by the 2nd chakra and some stones to use to come into balance with this energy.
